Benton County, home to the first wind farms in Indiana…

Over the last couple years, the horizon of Benton County has drastically changed. Visitors and residents now see hundreds of wind turbines among the seas of corn and soybeans fields.

We are among one of the largest single concentrated Wind Farms in the United States……653 so far!

Wind power, electricity generated by capturing the wind’s energy with modern wind turbines, is one of the lowest-cost, renewable electricity alternatives currently available. Wind power is a clean, domestic electricity resource that has seen a tremendous amount of growth and technology improvement over the past several years...

TOURS

Most people are intrigued by the wind turbines. One of the most frequently asked questions we receive is

“Can we take a tour?” and our answer is, “Absolutely!” 

Wind Tours Include


  • A video/slide presentation with Q & A
  • Walk up and touch a blade, take pictures
  • View a wind tourbine from 100 foot distance (with a signed waiver)

The tour is 2 – 2 ½ hours, is more in-depth and is for those looking to know more about the building details of a wind turbine. All tour times can be adjusted, however, depending on your time schedule. (See Tour Pricies)




Tour Prices


The tour is a $75 flat fee for up to 20 people. Over 20 it's $5 per person. Tours last 2-2.5 hrs, longer videos, more technical info, visit to turbine.




Hours of Operation


Tours for 2021 run from mid-April thru October by appointment only Monday thru Friday. Tour times generally begin at 10am EST but may be adjusted if you need a different time. Please call and we'll see what we can do.

Price of a Turbine


The cost of a single turbine is just over 1.2 million per megawatt (MW) or between $3-$4 million per turbine.




To the Grid


Overhead utility lines pulled by helicopter costs approximately $1 million per mile

Number of homes powered by 1 turbine: 420 homes - GE 1.5 MW 462 homes - Vestas 1.65 MW 500 homes - RePower 2.0 MW 700 homes - Siemens 2.3 MW 700 homes - Clipper 2.5 MW




Just How Fast


The speed of the turbine's blades at their tips is approximately 120 mph at 14rpm.




Lift This


The heaviest component of the wind turbine is the nacelle with the blades. The nacelle is approximately 56 tons, the blade assembly is 36+ tons and the tower is 71 tons for an estimated weight of 164 tons per turbine.




Underground


A turbines foundation consists of 377 yards of concrete (33 truckloads) and about 139 tons of of rebar and mounting hardware and are approximately 10' deep and 60' wide
